June 5, 2006 – Monopoly in basketball betting in Macau ends under the new contract signed between the Government and current betting operator.
According to the contract signed with Macau Slot, an STDM subsidy, the Government ends its monopoly in basketball betting, while granting it a further operation period of three years.
Meanwhile, the monopoly in football betting is likely to end when current monopoly is due to end in 2009, according to Jornal Va Kio.
However, no other operators has shown interests in the basketball betting business so far.
A total of nearly MOP 300 million was spent by gamblers on basketball betting during the first quarter of this year, far less than football betting, which stood at MOP 1.4 billion.
The gross income for basketball betting was MOP 27 million in the same period, while football betting MOP 71 million.
