But of all the centers being developed, analysts are predicting Macau to be
the most successful. It has the benefit of having a long-standing reputation as a gambling mecca, albeit one that has been tainted by mob involvement. Till recently, the victim of monopolistic control by Stanley Ho, one of Hong Kong and Macau’s major tycoons, the territory was littered with a string of seedy gambling halls.
Despite being on a much smaller scale than Las Vegas, Macau has managed to rival the former’s revenues. Last year Macau’s casinos made about $5.6 billion, compared with the $6 billion that casinos in the 6.5 km Las Vegas strip made, and this was with less than half as many gaming tables, and only 6% of the slot machines of Las Vegas.
