Telecommunications company, Companhia de Telecomunicac,o~es de Macau (CTM) said Tuesday it would launch a third generation mobile service (3G) in June or July.
The company’s chief executive, Phil Green, said that there had been an increase of 19 percent in the number of Internet users, which currently total 110,000, with 60 percent of residential customers.
This figure makes Macau the fifth-biggest home Internet user in Asia , after South Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Singapore.
Green also said that 55,000 new customers, a 22.5 percent rise, had registered for the mobile service.
He also noted that CTM had invested 30 million patacas over the last 12 months on several projects in Macau.
The company reduced its tariffs by between 13 percent and 17 percent for the Internet and around 31 percent for international calls from mobile or fixed line telephones.
CTM, which is majority-owned by Cable & Wireless has the fixed-line monopoly in Macau and shares the mobile market with Hutchison Mobile and Smart Tone.
Although it does not have an exclusive license for Internet services, CTM has no competition in this segment.
