July 3, 2006 | The Standard | After tens of thousands of people joined this year’s Reunification Day rally in support of universal suffrage, an organizer stressed Sunday they are calling on Beijing and the SAR government to move towards full democracy here, and not necessarily asking for an instant resolution.
Jo Lee Wai-yee, convenor of rally organizer Civil Human Rights Front, said during RTHK’s City Forum Sunday that doubled attendance at this year’s rally – estimated by organizers to be 58,000 – reflected the Hong Kongers’ lingering frustration over the lack of democratic development in the nine years since reunification. Police, however, estimated the turnout at 28,000.
